About Us

About LWV of Sussex Highlands

Our Mission: Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.

The League of Women Voters of Sussex Highlands is a local chapter of a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in American democracy. We conduct local advocacy, education, and organizing to protect every resident's freedom to vote and to foster an informed, active citizenry.

The League is proud to be women-led and over 100 years old, emerging directly out of the women’s suffrage movement in 1920.

Nonpartisanship: The Core of Our Work

The League of Women Voters is nonpartisan and does not support or oppose any political party or any candidate.

As an organization dedicated to both voter education and advocacy, we take strong stances on policy issues relating to voting rights, civil rights, and other issues of importance. We courageously stand in our nonpartisanship, centering the rights of voters over the power of politicians and political parties.

Our Vision and Values

We operate within the powerful vision and values established by the League of Women Voters of New Jersey (LWVNJ).

Our Vision

We envision a people-powered democracy, actively dismantling systemic racism and removing all barriers to full participation in our government, to ensure New Jersey’s diverse communities are empowered to build political and community power.

Our Values

  • Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: We center the voices of the communities we serve and seek justice for those most often impacted by systemic racism and oppression in our democracy.
  • Integrity and Respect: We are committed to treating all individuals with respect and dignity.
  • Education, Empowerment, and Engagement: We build community power through emboldening ordinary people to gain knowledge and skills, get engaged, and lead.
  • Transparency and Accountability: We foster trust through an open, accountable, accessible, and visible decision-making process. We take accountability for our mistakes and celebrate our growth.
  • Community, Collaboration, and Belonging: We prioritize community, collaboration, and belonging through strengthening partnerships with individuals and organizations that share our values and goals.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commitment

LWV is an organization fully committed to DEI in principle and in practice. Discrimination or harassment of any kind will not be accepted within the League, including but not limited to race, socio-economic status, age, ability status, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, gender identity, or marital status.

The League is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of DEI, access, and belonging for all people. The collective sum of our individual differences and life experiences represents not only our culture, but our reputation and the organization's mission and achievements as well.

The Federated Model

When you join our local chapter, you become part of a nationwide structure that amplifies your impact. LWV operates at three levels: local, state, and national.

The federated structure comprises the national League and affiliated state and local Leagues that are separately incorporated. Those who join our League become members of their local League, the New Jersey State League, and the national League.
